What Is An Astrology Chart? by Beto Boton

An Astrology Chart, also called "Birth Chart" or "Natal Chart" is a graphic representation of the sky at the exact time of one's birth, having at its centre "the person" and the exact place (Latitude Longitude Coordinates) where this person was born.

To calculate your Birth Chart, you’ll need your time, date and place of birth. Some people don’t know their birth time. If you can’t find it on your birth certificate, you can try contacting the "birth records office" in your state or area of birth. Most maternity hospitals also keep accurate information about birth, including time, and some will research that information for you free or for a fee. Well worth a try.

We can say Astrology has an "anthropocentric" view of the universe, as to say the chart is centred in the person using this time and place. Perhaps, one day, we will have people being born on the Moon or Mars or any other place in the universe and we will have to change our reference point to this place in the universe where the person was born.

I prefer to use the term Natal Chart, it is just a personal preference.

Astrology's premiss (or premise) is that everything that exists in the "macrocosm" exists in its identical form in the "microcosm" and this is known as Hermes' law. NO, it is not related to the fashion business, but to "Hermes Trismegistus" Greek for "Hermes the thrice-greatest" or "Mercurius ter Maximus" in Latin. Hermes is the the author of the "Hermetic Corpus", a series of sacred texts that are the basis of Hermeticism, an ancient tradition encompassing alchemy, astrology, and theosophy.

NOTE:
Important Definitions
Macrocosm = the whole of a complex structure, especially the world or the universe, contrasted with a small or representative part of it. Contrasted with microcosm.
Microcosm = humankind regarded as the representation in miniature of the universe: the belief in correspondences between the Universe and Man — between microcosm and macrocosm.

Let's get on with the practicalities!

What is in the Natal Chart?

From the Astrologer's point of view, a Natal Chart must have the following elements:

1- The 12 signs of the zodiac. Here comes the first shocking information!

Did you know you have ALL signs in you? 👈

Just a quick reflection here: if the 12 signs of the zodiac are in the "macrocosm" around you at the time of your birth, they are all represented, one way or another, inside you, the corresponding "microcosm".

It has been almost 40 years looking at most first time clients shocked faces 😕 when I say this. Well, how are you supposed to know this? At the end of the day you did not learn this in school!

2- Next on the Natal Chart we will have the celestial bodies, mainly the Sun, Moon and the Planets,
placed with reference to their position in the zodiac signs. For example the Sun in Aries and the Moon in Pisces, Jupiter in Sagittarius and so on.

"Oh no! Not again. Are you going to tell me I have all planets inside me, the microcosm?"

Oh yes, that is exactly it. All planets, each one with a full bag of meaningful characteristics are there in your Natal Chart awaiting to be translated to you in useful information about yourself.

3- The 12 houses and the most famous ones called the Ascendant and the Midheaven.

What are houses?

Houses are the result of the division of the day (24 hours) in 12 sectors.

The first house starts at East and it is the eastern horizon at the time we are calculating the chart. This point is called the "Ascendant". It is a very significative point as it intersects a sign of the zodiac which is "rising" at this time. This is the Ascendant Sign and for briefness sake called just the Ascendant.

As mentioned previously, there are 12 houses counting from the Ascendant onwards and the 10th house is the highest point in the sky, seen from the place we are calculating the houses from. It is called the Midheaven for this reason, and it also plays a significant role on a Natal Chart.

The houses bring meanings by defining areas of life they represent. The second house, for example, is related to finances, the 6th house representing your everyday activities and work and the Midheaven representing where you want to go in life, what would be your success (for you, of course).

Just to say there are many different meanings for each of the 12 houses and they all are coherent; this is how an Astrologer "searches" for answers about you and your life.

4- Finally, we have "Aspects"

Astrological Aspects are specific angles the celestial bodies form on a particular chart. For example, the Sun is in trine with Jupiter, and this means the Sun is at 120 degrees distance from Jupiter as measured using the zodiac as reference (just FYI this is known as ecliptical coordinates system). The important little bit of information about the aspects is that they will form harmonious or conflicting relationships between the celestial bodies, creating "easy passages" or "challenges" encompassing the meaning of the above mentioned signs, celestial bodies, and houses.

This is what a Natal Chart is, simplified and in technical terms. This is a road map of an individual, it is the "great manual" we're all born with, that gives information about our preferred way of being.

Here is a sample of a Birth Chart as used by any Astrologer.

We can read on our Natal Chart about our characteristics, and more importantly, what we can do to improve our life skills towards a happier and more fulfilling existence.

I hope this gives you a little bit of information of what an Astrology Chart is about.

I will be posting more about this fascinating world of Astrology.

Stick around.
